Chicken Raising and Care

What's more city farm-ish than raising chickens in your backyard? Just think of a cute little mini-house, and a brood of your own hens faithfully giving you 'farm fresh' eggs every day.

It's not difficult to get started in the city chicken business (that is, if the business is for your family's own consumption--commercial chicken raising is a whole different ball game with it's own set of rules and regulations). And, aside from the potential costs of a chicken coop, the expenses are also very minimal.(If you'd like some general information on the basic costs involved in having and raising chickens, look here.)

Most cities allow you to keep chickens inside city limits, but check with your own city ordnances to find out the specific restrictions and requirements (for example, some areas may only let you have 2 or 3 chickens without a permit, other cities will let you have more. Most areas have requirements on how far from a residence the coop must be placed. And many cities allow hens, but forbid roosters.)

(And by the way, you don't need a rooster for a hen to lay eggs. You just need a rooster if you want fertilized eggs.).

If your just getting started with chickens. This is a great place to start.

If you're ready for basic information about chicken coops and what you need to consider when starting, this is your place.
