Benefits of Gardening
Growing your own groceries is on the rise...
but what, really, are the benefits?
Gardening is catching on with just about everyone these days. Seed companies are reporting a 40% and more increase in sales (saying business hasn't been so good since the 1970's). It seems that everyone is planting food somewhere, even if it's not in a traditional garden...rooftops and walls, patios and containers...the variety and creativity is amazing!
Why is gardening taking off with such a force? Because it just plan makes sense to grow your own food. Here's some of the reasons why...
12 Benefits of Gardening:
1. It's a great return on your investment. (George Ball of Burpee said that, for instance, spending $1 on bean seeds will give you about $75 worth of beans!)
2. It tastes better (and even smells better, too).
3. It leaves a smaller carbon footprint (you don't have to get in your car and drive to the store to buy vegetables that have been trucked or flown in from somewhere else. Your food is just out your back door).
4. It gives your family something to do together.
5. It's educational.
6.You can learn about new kinds of vegetables not readily available at the store.
7. Free exercise without having to pay for a gym membership.
8. There's a tremendous amount of satisfaction in growing something from a seed that you can turn into food.
9. Gives you something to do when you want to slow down or unwind.
10. Teaches appreciation in small things, and helps you to not take as many things for granted.
11. Gives you an excuse to be generous--you can share your harvest with others.
12. In these tough times, it can not only save you money, but can help you generate money as well. You can sell your surplus.
I'm sure there are more benefits to gardening than these 12 reasons...can you think of some I've left out? If you haven't started a garden of your own, but are ready to take the leap, here's some pages that might be of help to you.
