Taking Care of Worms
Learn about Your Worms!
One of the biggest things to keep in mind when keeping worms is that they're living organisms. They actually have preferences--likes and dislikes. Watch what kinds of food your worms seem to love. You'll be able to tell by how fast they congregate around the food you've given them. Although a worm might not have a 'personality' of it's own, there are certainly facinating facts and behaviors about your worms. Get to know them.
Changing the Worm Bedding
From time to time, your worms will need a change of environment. There will come a point when the bedding in your worm bin has a high concentration of worm castings in it. When it reaches this point, it's necessary to change the bedding for your worms. Finally, your worms have done the work and have given you a nutrient rich material to add to your garden!
The time to change your bedding varies. There's no hard and fast rule to follow. It depends on how many worms you have, what you've been feeding them, how moist the environment is, etc.
Harvesting Your Worms
There are more than one way to harvest your worms. One way is to dump the contents of your worm bin on a plastic tarp. Make several small piles and shine a light on the piles. The worms will bury themselves in the compost to avoid the light. Once they're buried, skim the top of the compost off. Continue doing this until you're down to mostly just worms.
A second way to do it is to push all the contents of your worm bin to one side of the bin. Add fresh bedding to the other side. Bury some food waste in the new bedding and wait for the worms to migrate over to the new bedding.
A third way to do it is to take out 2/3 of the contents of your worm bin and use it in the garden. Don't worry about the fact that you've got worms in it. They're good for the garden.
Add new bedding to the 1/3 worms that are left in the bin and continue on as usual.
